Brown Betty Teapot

The Brown Betty teapot is a very basic ceramic teapot that was created in the 1800s and was very popular with everyone. When I grew up it was said to be a very good no-fuss teapot – so not necessarily one you would use when ‘company’ came over. Still, if you know about tea, the Brown Betty brewed great tea.

Now you can get the shape of the Brown Betty in many colors and sizes but originally the glaze used was managanese brown which was apparently developed by the ate Marquis of Rockingham on his English estate. The teapot was made from a terracotta clay so the tea would stay nice and hot and then covered in the brown glaze. The shape itself was peculiar to the Brown Betty. It is very high and round in comparison to many teapots.

Although this teapot has quite a history, it is still popular today and many ‘normal ceramic teapots’ are based on the Brown Betty shape, look and feel.

You can still buy this teapot, which is made in Staffordshire, England and the usual size is a 4 cup teapot, which is a great size for most occasions, certainly just right for a family of 3 or 4. This original teapot is even available on Amazon for around $24.

However, you can get this teapot in different sizes, ranging from the small 2 cup teapot (perfect for singles) to the 8 cup one for occasions when more people are around to enjoy their tea.

As a tea drinker, one of the main things to look out for In a teapot is a good functioning spout. I’ve bought some very nice looking teapots only to be disappointed that they didn’t “pour” well and really the last thing you want is hot tea spilled on your new tablecloth!

Personally ceramic teapots not only look good but do produce a very good cup of tea. They are also relatively easy to clean and can often be added to the dishwasher. If you do this often, you won’t have a problem with tea stained residue on the inside of the pot.

If you want to have a great cup of tea, get a Brown Betty teapot.
