Tea Made In A Teapot Makes The Better Cup Of Tea!

Teapots came to us from China (actually the district of YiXing which still produces wonderful teapots to this day).  Although there is no real date for starting to drink tea in China, it was probably between the 3rd and 5th Century.  However, teapots became popular in China during the Ming Dynasty (12th to 15th century). Japan followed suit and by the 15th century both the Japanese and Chinese were drinking tea from a teapot. By that time, tea was no longer considered just a medicinal drink but people enjoyed the taste anytime simply for pleasure.  By the 15th century both Japanese and Chinese artists were busy designing teapots. This art of teapot design remains today.  You can purchase teapots in all sorts of shapes and colors - there are cat teapots, tea pots shaped like a cottage, like a hat - in fact whatever the imagination can come up with!  When tea drinking spread to other Asian countries and then to Europe, teapots were used too.

Today, in our fast paced world, many of us choose just to dunk a teabag into a mug. While this is OK - we still get the benefit of a good cup of tea, we can do much better using a teapot. It's really a case of habit. I always use a teapot, not just because of the better taste but I get to have two cups of tea instead of one! Tea leaves need room to unfurl to develop their flavor and obviously there is more room in a teapot than a cup or mug. Most teapots have either an infuser (large enough to accommodate the leaves so that they have room to unfurl) or many have a built in sieve so you don't have to fish out leaves from your cup. Teapots also look good. A tray with a teapot, some teacups and saucers, milk, lemon, sugar bowls, is just good on the eye and makes drinking a simple cup of tea, a great pleasure. It goes without saying that small sandwiches, tiny cakes or biscuits complete the occasion, making it into an afternoon tea special!

There are many websites that specialize in teapots.  Here you will find a wonderful assortment of teapots - from dainty English china to the purple clay of YiXing in China. Here you can browse and inform yourself about the history, making, art and design of teapots. They are also a wonderful gift - something really that everyone can use.
